About the Author:

Robin Sharma is a globally respected humanitarian who, for over a quarter of a century, has been devoted to helping human beings realize their native gifts. Widely considered one of the top leadership and personal mastery experts in the world, his clients include famed billionaires, iconic professional athletes, and many Fortune 100 companies. The author’s #1 bestsellers such as The 5AM Club, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, The Leader Who Had No Title and The Greatness Guide have sold millions of copies in over 92 languages and dialects, making him one of the most widely read writers alive.

Shobana’s Note:

A paragraph on page 219 of the book says this.

What makes a fabulous wine so fantastic is the terroir – the environment the vines are raised in. Elements of a terroir include climate, soil, terrain, and farming practices. Similarly, your mind has its own terroir – the surroundings that shape each thought you produce. A negative environment breeds degraded thinking. A pristine terroir promotes positive thoughts. So, choose yours well. Please.

The paragraph above outlines what it takes to fashion life at its best, and as detailed in the highly evocative, The Everyday Hero Manifesto, you will see how the truth of the statement above revolves around the real lives of luminaries who have made a difference in the world.

Reading the book was an incredible experience for me. I came off a lot more knowledgeable, wiser, and braver to face any unforeseen circumstantial occurrences that come my way. It is a book that will speak to you on a personal level, masterfully crafted to touch the sensibilities of the everyday hero in you.

Robin has created something sensational I should say by writing this book, and the lesson I learned the most is that even at the peak of one’s prime or time, misfortunes and the stumbles of life stands at the behest. It is a call to awareness of how fragile life is and as Robin says, life is a short ride.

I would recommend this meditative read to everyone. It is a definite guide on how to get past hurdles and setbacks and create a monumental experience as you journey through life.

The End.

About the book:

Hope’s Merry-Go-Round is the latest addition to Mary M. Cushnie-Mansour’s collection of incredible stories told. The idea for the story mooted when she read an article in the newspaper about sexual abuse by a sibling, something she felt was an abuse seldom talked about.

Here is the tragic story of Hope, a quiet child, often ignored by her mother and two sisters throughout her growing up years. She was the “unwanted” accident in her family, the child her mother was afraid to have due to pregnancy complications. Her sisters, Faith, and Charity were much more advanced in age, while her brother, Jeremiah, was five years older.

Jeremiah’s mean streak began from the time she was born since he detested his parents having another baby. He would soon traumatize and hurt Hope even as a young toddler.

Her mother would brush away his bullying tactics by saying that it would teach her not to be a cry baby, whenever Hope cried at his antics or threw a tantrum.

The only consoling factor was that her dad doted on her, which made up for some of the hurts she experienced. She was somewhat comforted by the warmth and affection he showered on her, although he often turned a blind eye to his wife’s careless dismissal of Jeremiah’s taunts and bullying.

At eleven, Jeremiah began to sexually abuse Hope, which lasted till she turned thirteen. Hope couldn’t understand how as a sibling he behaved in such an indecent manner and was helpless during the assaults.

She kept the abuse a secret in order not to hurt her parents. Anyway, she wasn’t sure if her mother who doted on her brother and who could see no wrong in him, would believe her if she confided in her.

She withdraws into her shell.

She turns to a life of promiscuity as an adult, teaching during the day, and turning the nights into a sexual haunt.

She meets and befriends Cooper, a gay, who turns out to be her best friend and confidante. He had his problems but was there for her in every way as a good friend.

When she and Cooper were insulted by Jeremiah at a family Christmas dinner, Hope, embarrassed and disgusted, attempts suicide – her third try but is saved in the nick of time by Cooper who rushes her to the hospital. Cooper had saved her life once before.

At the hospital, she is assigned to a medical counselor by the name of Dr. Laurie Hudson. Laurie too had been abused by family members during her growing up years and had run away from home at the age of sixteen. She could relate to Hope’s suffering and wanted to help her overcome the trauma of a painful past.

They become good friends.

With Laurie’s guidance and counsel, Hope begins to heal as she slowly opens up about the mental anguish she had undergone as a child and the trauma of being a victim of sexual abuse.

Jeremiah dies, and a hateful past is buried with him.

The story ends on a positive note with Hope beginning a new chapter, a changed woman, more oriented to finding happiness and love as opposed to the sadness, fear, and shame that had hounded her all through her life. She finally makes peace with her family members.

Shobana’s Note:

I would recommend Hope’s Merry-Go-Round to anyone as an enlightening and informative read. Often, as Mary says in her book, sexual abuse by siblings is seldom highlighted.

The story will take the reader into the depths of hidden hurts and trauma of children at the hands of people closest to them, who turn out to be their worst nightmare.

The story also highlights how parents of abused children often don’t notice the warning signs of bullies and tormentors among their children. Turning a blind eye to the predicament of abused children will draw a wedge between the relationship of a parent and a child, as is the case of Hope, who was bullied and sexually abused by her brother from the age of eleven.

This heartwrenching story will take you through the trauma of an abused mind and in the end, liberate you by the concerted touch of care and at the hands of gentle healing. In this regard, Dr. Laurie Hudson, and Hope's best friend, Cooper turn out to be her saving grace.

Mary M. Cushnie-Mansour has written a remarkable, touching story about the realities of sexual abuse and, lifelong effects on the victims.

The End.

Review by Shobana: Five faces of a mortal

Date of Review: 30/06/2021

The author, Terveen Gill has a unique way of depicting events and characters in her stories, often touching on human values.

In this book, Five Faces of a Mortal, she chronicles five different stories that showcase her strong writing skills and imaginative mindset. Her stories here emphasize basic human rights and sensitivities.

In the first of her chronicles, Two Trapped Fisherman’s Sons, she highlights bias against two boys who are co-joined at birth. She shows them to be lovable characters who are smart in their ways. They were prevented from participating in a sacred ritual due to their condition; however, their father stands up for their rights and ignores the head of the village’s stern rebuke. He is asked to leave the village with his family. One cannot but fall in love with the antics of the little boys. I enjoyed reading the story.

The Man with the crooked mustache tells the story of a man who loses his wife and two children in a freak accident at a carnival. He shoots himself to death as he is unable to come to terms with their untimely demise. There is drama and suspense as the man returns to haunt the place where his family perished and disappears with two children who were at the carnival.

A beautiful, up-and-rising actress who has worked hard for her money has a secret to unfold in Beneath the Skin. She has a mother who is in on the secret, however, she is ill and bedridden. Heena, the actress, has a nurse who looks after her mother when she goes for her shoots. In an altogether unprecedented move, the nurse finds out the secret and blackmails Heena.

The story of A Cat-tea affair will make you laugh so hard. A definite must-read. Terveen is candid with the character’s expressive comments and actions.

I think Terveen’s computer engineering background has had a big influence on Daredevil_666. The technical buff has a girl’s name, Nari. His father had always wanted him to be an army officer which didn’t materialize. In a spate of anger, the father calls him a failure. He may be a loser in real life, but in the virtual world, he was a daredevil!

A delightful read. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Author: P.E. Fischetti

About the Author:

P. E. Fischetti, born and raised in the suburbs of Washington DC, attended Walter Johnson High School, and The University of Maryland, where he earned a B.A. in Criminology and an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy.

He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD, with his wife of 34 years. They have two children in their mid-twenties living in the DC area.

Presently, Fischetti is the Creative Writer for Paul Fischetti Publishing and has his website address as www.pefischetti.com.

Previously, he spent twenty years in counseling and another twenty years running two different businesses.

He ventured into full-time writing in the year 2011, publishing his first book, The Big Train’s Backyard, in 2013, followed by The Safety, in 2015 and Ms.Pretty Please in 2020.

Fischetti comes from a family who has a penchant for playing sports and athletics and is the youngest of four brothers. He is athletic, enjoys watching sports, and cheers for any DC area team.

Shobana’s Note:

The Safety, published in 2015, the second book authored by P.E. Fischetti after The Big Train’s Backyard (2013), is one of the most intensely written sports stories that have successfully captured the imagination and heartstrings of his readers.

It tells the story of Guy Finelli (Gaetano Anthony Finelli) and his inner struggle in dealing with drugs, his involvement with the elusive drug Kingpin (The Turk), the murder of his FBI agent lover, and meteoric rise to stardom to be the greatest Safety ever to grace the fields of football. He dealt a heavy blow when his football icon, Sean Taylor was murdered while defending his wife and daughter in his teenage years.

Safety, historically known as a safetyman, is a position in gridiron football played by a member of the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up from ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage who can play as line-backers or deep as normal safeties. ... Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. (Taken from Wikipedia)

Fischetti’s third book, Ms. Pretty Please published in 2020, ends the trilogy detailing the lives of the Finelli and Santucci families of Kensington and Bethesda, Maryland.

As The Safety, Finelli outshone his competitors with his panther-like quickness to the ball, lion-like strength to tackle the runner in the backfield, and always held the football arena with a suspense-filled game.

As he began to get into the limelight with his prowess, when his team won with seconds to go in a suspense-filled game, Coach Favarro had tears in his eyes,

I should have known you would be a block granite for me…I should have believed my eyes watching you in practice all summer… I should have…

As with his other books, Fischetti begins his book with a historical adaptation of how football began to take form in the lives of Americans.

During the Civil War era, organized sports slowly replaced war between states, cities, and towns as acceptable aggression between conflicting sides. Football was the most combative of these aggressions. Football – the first attempt was a rough combination of soccer and rugby - Rutgers University against Princeton University – November 6, 1869.

All of  Mr. Fischetti’s books to-date have a remarkable account of facts that serve to intrigue as it clarifies. His in-depth knowledge of dates and times often relates with candor to the characters that he outlines with ease and creates an exactness to the stories he puts out to the world.

Guy Finelli as The Safety is a powerhouse and reading his story gives one the feeling that the field he steps onto is his foothold and that no other player comes to prominence except him. He takes command of the whole game.

The man in Guy Finelli had to face many tragic occurrences in his young life that leads to a trying time for him to overcome. I think the most hurtful of them all was when he lost his love to a mindless murder at a time when she was carrying his child. He makes wise decisions within seconds, and while waiting for help had to perform a C-section to save his child.

In Guy Finelli you find the runaway too, the man who wants time off from his stardom or personal disasters. The man who struggles inwardly to keep up to the success of a half-brother who has risen to the highest ranks both personally and career-wise. However, in Alex Santucci, he also sees his mental and physical support. He has never once failed Finelli.

However, with love, dedication, and his newfound love who he marries, not forgetting his precious love child that he saved to keep a beautiful past alive, Guy Finelli is an emulation to those who believe in the miracles of second chances.

Isn’t it interesting that Guy Finelli chose to rise as The Safety – the last line of defense in football…

I highly recommend this book for a great read to anyone, especially, fans of football.

The Game:

As no one can summarize the game better than the author who is as passionate as he is knowledgeable, as follows in Mr. Fischetti’s words, is the game eloquently explained:

From now on American Football is Football and Mayla Football is Soccer. The only other kinds of Football are Australian Rules Football (which is more like Rugby) and Canadian Football( which is like American Football with an extra player, wider field, fewer downs, etc..)

As I state in "The Safety", Football was played between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. It was more like a Rugby & Soccer hybrid. Soon it was played by Colleges all across America in post-Civil War times. The rules were set up in the 1880s to make the game uniform.

The point of the game is to score by getting in the other team's end zone and get six points. The field is one hundred yards with ten-yard end zones for each team to defend. Total 120 yds. It is 160 feet wide or 53.3 yds(a soccer field is 65 yds wide & 110 to 120yds long).

A team gets four downs after they receive the ball on a kick-off. Generally, they have to gain 70 to 80 yds on a drive to score a Touchdown for 6 points. After a TD, they get to kick an extra point(1 point) from thirty-three yds or a two-point conversion(2 points) if they score on a play from the three-yard line.

Every series or drive, a team gets four plays to gain ten yards. Usually, they punt the football on 4th down if they have not made ten yards and play defense. If they make a first down by gaining ten or more yards, they get the first Down again...etc.

A team can kick a Field goal if they get close enough, generally within 60 yards of the goalposts that are on the end of each end zone. That is worth 3 points.

A team can gain Safety(rare) and receive 2 points if they tackle the other team in their end zone.

Each game has 8 referees to call penalties(which is annoying) but it keeps players from blocking and tackling incorrectly, like holding, blocking from behind, offsides, etc.

A game has 4 quarters of 15 minutes. The clock stops a lot for incomplete passes and going out of bounds and team time-out. It usually takes 3 hours to finish most games.

The perfect game for advertisers and parties. Each play takes an average of six seconds. But each play the team has to be set(not moving, with only one man eligible to go sideways(in-motion). This takes ten to fifteen seconds, with each team yelling out adjustments. The defense can move anywhere, except crossing the line of scrimmage, before the play starts with a snap from Center to the Quarterback.

On offense, five players make up the blockers, one QB & five eligible receivers. the offense has to have 7 players on the line of scrimmage, close to each other or spread wide. The number of formations is endless but generally, the QB receives the football from the center blocker with two outside receivers on the line of scrimmage and three players behind him or the flank or slot.-the end-

Shobana’s Note:

Big Train’s Backyard, published in 2013 is the first of P.E. Fischetti’s books, leading to a trilogy, The Safety (2015) and Miss Pretty Please (2020).

It is the first of his stories accounting for the lives of the Finelli and Santucci families of Kensington and Bethesda, Maryland.

In Big Train’s Backyard, P.E. Fischetti has managed to invoke unadulterated interest for baseball by infusing his love for the game through his well-written, insightful display of words and descriptive account of places and incidences, an amazing fusion, that makes it an invaluable read.

He has written an educational book as well as an immersive read.

Big Train’s Backyard stimulates the mind. The book will give fans a real insight into what it takes to be a winner in a game that is as explosive as it is endearing.

The multi-million-dollar enterprise of baseball that Fischetti outlines, borders around the thrill of extravagance and philanthropy which makes it an exciting game to be part of.

If you are not a fan already, reading P.E. Fischetti’s story of the triumphs and pitfalls of the game and its players will make you one.

I highly recommend this book for a great read to anyone, especially, fans of baseball.

The Story:

An excerpt from Big Train’s Backyard where P.E. Fischetti explains the game in a few words:

Baseball is unlike any other game on the planet played by professionals in front of large crowds. A team can be at the top of the mountain sporting a winning streak or as low as the Dead Sea and ready to fire the manager, and a week later those positions can drastically change.

This is the story of the rise of a baseball player, Alex Santucci, who reached the pinnacle of his career winning the World Series for Washington DC’s, Presidents and came to be known as the “greatest baseball talent on earth.”

He is the man who declared that he was on a mission. A mission to stop the era of pain and the sorrow of loss and that it was time to free the feelings of hope to love baseball once again in Washington.

Having been earlier contracted to Kansas City Crowns, the 14-year veteran, All-Star 3rd baseman had a tough decision to make with the move. His loyalty to his home team was unquestionable. However, his heartstrings pulled him to the home ground of his idol, Walter Johnson’s backyard in Washington, DC.

Walter Johnson, “The Big Train,” had been his motivation from as young as seven years of age.

Throughout his career, Alex Santucci deals with physical pain associated with the game and is prescribed medication and drugs. Later, he is diagnosed with a growth in his pancreas and adrenal gland. He undergoes surgery and despite the medical crisis, his commitment towards his game remains steadfast.

He marries the love of his life, and his ardent supporter, Sally Keegan. His ties with his family clan endow him with love, support, and praise as they look up to him with pride as a true leader in his field.

He is also the “sweetheart” of reporters, where he shows patience, and a trustworthy demeanor in his drive to maintain his role as one of the stalwarts of baseball.

But as he sat down, he realized the emotions of the morning, the laugher of the day, and the blur of the afternoon was still swirling in his head like a Midwest tornado looking to touch down somewhere in his brain – (when Alex was in the process of being interviewed by reporters).

There is a vulnerability to Alex Santucci that readers will love. He is not afraid to disclose his emotional upheavals.

A moment to remember is when he seeks confession to find inner healing.

Alex Santucci who takes the Presidents to unprecedented heights is hailed as a baseball hero. And aptly, the spirit of Walter Johnson lives through his home runs and successes.
